Jgriciiltnre of Worth-Carolina. LfeTTER II. * To Charles Pishrr, esq. Secretary of the Row an Agricultural Society. Sir,? -Havii-g suggested some gene ral principles, which I think, ought to govern us in our efforts to improve the state of agriculture, I now proceed, as was proposed, more directly to the sub ject of your addicts. I am well satisfied that yoiu proposition, " to have geologi cal surveys of the state taken," embra ces an objt-ct which has an important bearing on the interest of agriculture: still, 1 am not quite certain whether the plon you propose, is likciy to be the best that could bi devised, lor carrying your views into execution. But proceeding on tiie ground, thai a geological survey of the state is a most interesting arid im portant object, we may leave the parti cular mode by which it is to be accom plished, to future discussion. My pre 8- lit object is, to offer my reasons for thinking so favorably oi the scheme it self. Though I have directed my reading or late towards the study ot geology, cn account 'it us supposed practical tenden cy. yet I do not profess to be master ot ihi riuoject; fend dexiring to quality my self better, both for for nung an opinion respeting the object, to which you have invited the attention of our citizcn*, and tor offering o-y reasons for that opinion when formed, I have obtained ?rom a friend, who is familiar with this science, a detailed statement respecting the 06 ject of a geological survey, and the ad vantages whu h may be cxpecicd to ac ci ut from it to the public. 1 am liberty, moreover, to make such use of this in formation as I please, and slull there fore avail myself of it, to a considerable extent, in the following observation-; se lecting such parts as I deem most im portant to my pi est nt purpose, and em ploying my correspondent's language cr my own, a* shall be most convenient. It appears that geology, in a scientific sense, is *?the study of the earth;" em b acing those inanimate substancts , which are naturally found on or be.ow the surfacc; all those boc ks indeed ^ which appear to make up the solid globe. In this view, a geolo ical survey compiles a vast number of particulars, which, although they seem to interest men of science wonderfully, have very little to do with th? promotion of your objects and mine. A geological survey of the state, in our sense of the word, has for its object, "to ascertain what useful minerals we have in this state, which either arc or may be employed in agriculture, or any of the arts of lifp, ! or which may become soufces of profit to the state as articles of commeice." We wish to know whether such quar. | ries and mints as have been already dis i covered in the state, d u not exist also in other places not yet noticed; whether | there be not many other valuable sub r stances of the same class, which have , not been used at all, because they are not known; ant) whether we have not within our own limits, some articles for : which we now send large sums of iro | i.ey abroad When substanccs of this | kind are found, and are announced 10 . the public, we wish to know of what use i ihry arc ? what is the best nte?n6 of : bringing them into use ? and how wc L n?a> turn them to the best account. We de?ire, therefore, not only to have a geo logical survey made, put to have the re sult published in such a form, that it ' may be generally understood, and, so far as is expedient, reduced to pr^ticc. I therefore, sir, entirely approve of your Miggestion respecting the expediency ol having the rcsuh of such surveys, whefanadc, laid before the t>oard ot ag riculture, to he published, either wholly or in part, in their transactions, t Such, I believe, sir, are some of the 1 objects whirh the Rowan Agricultural Society has in view, in desiring to insti* itute geological surveys of the state: Such, 1 am confident, are the views i which prevail here. ? Thus much respecting the object of ; the proposed surveys. In the copious I details which my friend has been so good as to furnish respecting the advan tage 9 which xvill accrue to the fiubltc , Irumsuch an undertaking, he has insist r ed thai lh? respectability of the tta^t
